What Evelyn has to say about our house…
7 December 2009
I am at Evelyn’s school, taking care of odds and ends for Mrs. Slade. While stapling some of the class’ work, I came across a drawing and explanation Evelyn did:
“My house is bluish-white and my bedroom is green and if you ever go to my house close to this day you will like to come upstairs and you will find my bed with no sheet. The end.”
Just a note: Evelyn takes the sheet off of her bed and prefers just a comforter. We *do* let her have a sheet.
A truism proven true

Our house is strewn with boxes: big boxes, small boxes, folded boxes, constructed boxes.
The girls have spent a lot of time playing with them, making forts, slides, and various other items from them.
Before dinner, Evelyn was screeching happily, and she shrieked “This has been one of the greatest days of my life!” When we asked her why, she said, “This moving thing has turned out to be really, really fun!”
We asked what her favorite part of the day was, and she responded, without hesitation, “Playing with the boxes! It’s been a great day.”
Quote from Charlotte
30 November 2009
Me: Charlotte, don’t poke me.
Charlotte, without missing a beat: I’m not poking you; I’m giving you a kiss with my finger.
This is Halloween

What house should we hit next?

28 October 2009
Me: “I want a nanny.”
James: “I want a new house!”
Evelyn: “I want a maid. Because I don’t want to have to do everything myself.”
Our little dancer
23 October 2009
Evelyn is taking once-a-week dance classes at the YMCA. She goes for 45 minutes and it’s half tap, half ballet.
She’s really enjoying it. This past Monday was the parent observation class, which was a lot of fun. They did two silly spooky dances. I think Evelyn is more dramatic than graceful (check out her “monster” face), but she’s definitely benefiting from the class.
Do ballerinas stick out their tongues? They do if they're 5.
Doing the Frankenstein walk.
"Rule-ah hoops," as my kids call them.
Two new quotes
20 October 2009
Charlotte was resisting a nap this afternoon, so I reassured her that everyone was taking a nap. “Evelyn is having quiet time, you are having quiet time, and Mom is going to lie down and have quiet time,” I said.
“Where’s Daddy?”
“He’s at work. But everyone else is in their rooms resting.”
“Mommy? Are you going to press the buttons on your computer before you go to your bed to rest?”

Evelyn’s homework this evening was to write the alphabet in uppercase letters, A-Z. She completed it and showed it to me. I encouraged her and told her how well she’s doing, etc. etc. “Well, I had a sort of hard time remembering the uppercase letters because I’ve been complicating on the lowercase letters.”
Right in our own backyard

So I’d been hearing rumbles about a little boy bringing a camping utensil/pocket knife to school, and the ensuing furor over his punishment.
It was at Evelyn’s school. It’s been all over the national news, and I had no idea it was at Downes Elementary. You know, where I take Evelyn everyday.
You can see the story from ABC News here.
I don’t know how I missed the memo, although Evelyn is *known* for forgetting things, or neglecting to empty her backpack.
In the meantime, I’m going to have the “safe things vs. not safe things” to take to school conversation with Evelyn. It’s a sad day when violence is so prevalent in our society that a 6-year old is required to attend reform school for bringing a camping utensil to school…
All About Evelyn
29 September 2009
At Evelyn’s elementary school open house last Monday night, I saw an interview that she had deigned to give a roving reporter. Here are her responses to the prompts:
At school I like to go outside.
What I don’t like about school is not getting to have any rest.
My friends are Samantha.
My favorite center table is science.
I like (circle one) reading fiction / nonfiction. *
When I grow up, I want to be a teacher. (!!!!)
My favorite place to visit is Old Orchard Beach.
My favorite sport is soccer.
This year, I want to learn about the earth’s core.
* Only one other child in the class of 16 had circled one. I don’t know if other kids didn’t have opinions or didn’t know what fiction and nonfiction means.
A tender naptime moment
29 September 2009
I give Charlotte a hug at nap time.
“Ew, Mommy. I don’t like your mouth stuff.”
“What? Do you mean that you think my breath is bad?”
“Yeah, your breath.”
“What, do you think your breath smells good?”
“Yeah, everyone likes the smell of my mouth breath.”
